Former India captain Sourav Ganguly's tenure as BCCI president ended when he replaced Virat Kohli with Rohit Sharma as the white-ball skipper. Years later, Shubman Gill's rise has paved the way for him to take over as the captain of the One-Day International (ODI) team, taking over from Rohit.
Ganguly believes that it is the right decision as it provides enough time for the new captain to settle in ahead of the 2027 ODI World Cup. “I am sure Rohit must have been spoken to. I am sure it's a mutual discussion. Rohit has been an outstanding leader. He has won the T20 World Cup and Champions Trophy,” Ganguly said, according to India TV.
“Even Shubman Gill will face the same at 40. Everyone in sport has to finish someday. Not a bad decision to promote Gill. He's shown a lot of talent in England. I think it's a fair call... Rohit can keep playing while you groom a young captain."
Ganguly believes Gill will be a successful captain, as shown in England, where he led India to a 2-2 series draw.
“I congratulate him. He has done well in England; he will do well in the future as well. The Indian team is very good. All the players perform well and that is why they have been given the chance,” Ganguly said.
Gill's first assignment as ODI captain will be the three-match series against Australia, starting October 19.
