According to veteran broadcaster Harsha Bhogle, Gujarat Titans skipper Shubman Gill was adjudged the Player of the match by former Indian skipper Sunil Gavaskar against Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede not only because of his innings where he anchored the chase, but also for his sharp captaincy.
GT were looking at a big first innings total at the halfway mark in MI’s innings, but the home side scored just 66 runs in their last 10 overs and lost six wickets in the process.
Gill employed some really good tactics by presenting a tricky blend of spin and pace (of Sai Kishore and Prasidh Krishna) to the MI batters in the middle overs, and it worked wonders for GT as Kishore and Prasidh took three wickets together.
During the chase, Gill had a good partnership with Jos Buttler, which helped lift the side over the par DLS score in the rain-affected chase. Ultimately, Rahul Tewatia and Gerald Coetzee helped GT win the game by scoring 15 runs in the last over.
Speaking after the game, Gill said that the game felt like a Test match and was frustrating due to its start-stop nature.
"There was a little bit of chaos when we came to bat after the break,” Gill said.
“But it was good to get this result. The game plans were different when we were batting in the powerplay when there was some rain. It felt like a Test match and we thought of playing normal cricket. The rain kept coming and it was not easy to come back in and play.
"Lot of emotions. Most of them were frustrating because at one stage, we were ahead of the game. But one of those phases of play when we lost four wickets. Felt like a Test match. But we got one more chance and we got across the line," he added.”
GT are now on top of the points table after eight wins in 11 games.
