Shubman Gill, India’s Test and ODI captain, who is also the vice-captain in the T20I set-up, is expected to be fit and ready to play in the T20I series against the visiting South African side, if all goes well at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Bengaluru.
"The captain has put in a lot of hard work during the rehab process. It is up to the CoE now. If everything goes according to plan, he should be in Cuttack by December 6–7, when the T20I squad is expected to assemble,” a source was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
The Indian captain had a neck spasm while batting during Day 2’s morning session of the Eden Garden Test and as a result, he missed out the remainder of the first Test in Kolkata, the second Test in Guwahati and the three-match ODI series.
Although he travelled with the team to Guwahati, Gill chose to use the time during ODIs to meet specialists in Mumbai and stay at home in Chandigarh as he reached the CoE in Bengaluru on December 1.
The T20I team, which will most likely be named on December 3, will assemble in Cuttack before the first match on December 9 and it is very likely that the 26-year-old Gill will be available for selection.
After Cuttack, the five-match series will move to New Chandigarh (December 11), Dharamsala (December 14) and Lucknow (December 17) before culminating in Ahmedabad (December 19).
