Rohit Sharma got lucky as two of his catches were dropped by the Gujarat Titans (GT) fielders in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 on May 30 (Friday) at the Maharaja Yadvinder Singh International Stadium in Mullanpur.
However, the former MI captain made the most of the chances and scored a 50-ball 80, which eventually led to his team scoring 228/5 and winning the game.
Admitting the dropped catches did help him, Rohit said that even after getting dropped, he had to score those runs eventually.
“When I play the game, I try to do my best to keep everything aside. Making sure I can do the job for the team. I had to make the most of the luck. I am glad I could do that. Somewhere down the line, you have got to be lucky and today was that day for me. I got lucky as those catches were dropped,” Rohit said in the post-match presentation.
Hardik Pandya, the MI captain, thanked his bowlers for being accurate on the wicket, which was tricky because of the dew in the second innings.
“At one point in time, the game was even-steven. I thought the wicket got better in the second innings. The way Gleeson bowled. Jassi is Jassi. Ashwani. Everyone chipped in well, and we held our nerves,” Pandya said.
Asked about the pattern of using Jasprit Bumrah, their trump card, in matches, Pandya had a simple reply: “Whenever you think the game is going away, just take him. It's like Mumbai housing prices - it's that expensive.”
Losing captain Shubman Gill, on the other hand, said that the dropped catches did have an impact on the game.
“Definitely not easy when we drop 3 sitters. [It] wasn't easy for the bowlers to control and it doesn't help when you drop 3 catches,” he said.
