Over the last 12 months, Abhishek Sharma has become a crucial cog in India’s T20 wheels, with a quick rise to the No.1 spot on the ICC T20I batter’s rankings. The left-hander was instrumental in India’s epic Asia Cup 2025 win, smashing 314 runs at a strike rate of 200.00.
However, his biggest test lies in front of him: Australian conditions. The left-hander has only played once in tough conditions outside Asia – South Africa – where he scored 97 runs across four innings, averaging just under 25.
Former Indian assistant coach Abhishek Nayar said the same, stating that it will be a big test for the Indian opener in Australian conditions against the lanky pacer Josh Hazlewood.
“It will be a big test for him, especially against Hazlewood, who is in good rhythm and extracting extra bounce. However, I feel that he has got enough experience by playing in the IPL and in South Africa,” Nayar said, reported The Indian Express.
“He (Abhishek) has a fearless mindset and will want to make a name for himself in Australia. This is a good chance for him, as it is very satisfying to earn respect in Australia. From how much I know him, he would want to make a name for himself here,” remarked Nayar.
If Abhishek Sharma does find his form, Nayar reckoned that Hazlewood would be out of form, and India would be up and running in the powerplay.
“If Abhishek Sharma is in form, Hazlewood will be out of form. The way he bats, he is known to hit the first ball for a four or a six. If you instil fear in the powerplay, it continues throughout the innings. That is Abhishek Sharma’s impact on the game. If he bats six overs, India will score between 60 to 80. It will ease the pressure for his batting partner, while it will increase for the opposition,” said Nayar.
The first of the five T20Is between Australia and India kick-off on October 29 (Wednesday) at the Manuka Oval.
