It was a scare and a half for the England women’s cricket team, as they were reduced to 101/6, chasing 179 to win against a dangerous-looking Bangladesh side in match 8 of the Women’s World Cup 2025 at the Assam Cricket Association Stadium in Guwahati on October 7 (Tuesday).
To rescue them from a perilous situation, their most experienced player and former captain, Heather Knight, rose to the occasion and handled the situation calmly to guide the side home by four wickets and with more than three overs to spare.
Knight, playing her 151st match in the ODI format, remained the anchor throughout the chase, putting together meaningful partnerships of 40, 25 and an unbeaten 79 with skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, Alice Capsey and Charlie Dean, respectively, for the third, sixth and seventh wicket respectively.
While she herself scored an unbeaten 79 off 111 balls, pacing her innings brilliantly with the help of eight fours and a six, Sciver-Brunt (32), Capsey (20) and Dean (27*) were the much-needed bursts of aggression to counter the spin trap of Bangladesh.
On the other hand, Bangladesh, after winning their first match against Pakistan, showed tremendous courage and determination to give an early warning to teams that are yet to face them in the competition. Despite scoring only 178, they kept England batters on the crease for nearly 47 overs.
