The match between the Delhi Capitals and UP Warriorz in Bengaluru was moving towards a quiet end, with DC needing 34 off the last over, but Grace Harris's hat-trick in the last over ensured that the game concluded in utter chaos.
Until then, DC’s chase had been an up-and-down ride with wickets falling at regular intervals, but Jemimah Rodrigues’s 56 off 35 gave them some hope. But it was distinguished by the talented Kranti Goud, who was really good with the ball and picked four wickets, including Shafali Verma, Meg Lanning and Jess Jonassen.
However, Harris’s hat-trick in the last over would be featured the most in the highlight of UPW’s bowling innings as they won the game by 53 runs.
Niki Prasad was the one to be dismissed on the first ball of the last over as she miscued an attempted deep midwicket shot and gave a simple catch to Harris. Arundhati Reddy was the next one to go as she sliced a full toss straight to Shweta Sehrawat at cover point, who was ecstatic in celebration as Reddy had given her a proper send-off after cleaning her stumps in the first innings.
However, the hat-trick delivery proved how improbable this entire happenstance was. Minnu Mani hit a full and floated delivery straight to Harris, which she could have hit anywhere.
This was the third instance of a bowler taking a hat-trick in the WPL, with Issy Wong and Deepti Sharma doing it in the 2023 and 2024 seasons, respectively.
UPW dropped as many as five chances on the night, but all three catches were taken easily. This is also the first time that the team that batted first has won a game in the 2025 season of the WPL.
