Yashasvi Jaiswal played one of the best knocks of the year on Day 1 of the first Test between England and India at Headingley. He scored 101 off 158 balls, hitting 16 fours and a six. He had a brilliant stand with new India captain Shubman Gill for the fourth wicket, adding 129 off 163 balls.
Reacting at the end of Day 1 of the Headingley Test, Jaiswal heaped praise on Gill, saying, “We had great camaraderie while playing together. We told each other to play session by session but hit the loose balls. I like playing with him and under him.”
Jaiswal was also asked about why he had been training so hard ahead of the first Test, to which he replied cheekily, “Next time I will not train this hard.”
In the next question, he was even more sarcastic when asked why he played on the leg side, saying, “Next innings I will keep that in mind and score more on the leg-side.”
Jaiswal even thanked head coach Gautam Gambhir, as he became the first Indian player to hit centuries on debut in both Australia and England. He said, “I had a chat with him during our practice session and the team management allows us to express ourselves on the field.”
