It is no secret that Suresh Raina and MS Dhoni shared a special bond. They spent plenty of time together in the Indian Premier League (IPL), winning plenty of titles and also with the national team, with whom they lifted the World Cup in 2011. In fact, they announced their international retirement on the same day as well.
Speaking of his decision to retire just moments after Dhoni had shocked the world with his, Raina, in a chat with Sports Tak, said, “We played so many matches together. I was fortunate to play with him for India, and with CSK. We got a lot of love. I've come from Ghaziabad, Dhoni from Ranchi.
"I played for MS Dhoni, then I played for the country. That's the connection. We've played so many finals, we won the World Cup. He's a great leader and a great human being."
Raina played his final edition in the IPL in 2021, ending the tournament with 5,528 runs, that included 39 fifties and a century. He put himself up for auction ahead of the 2022 season as well, but found no takers, following which he announced his retirement from the league as well.
Since making his India debut in 2005, Raina has gone on to score nearly 8,000 runs across formats. He was the first Indian player to have scored a century across all three formats.
