Virat Kohli’s slump in Test cricket has resulted in the 36-year-old moving outside the Top 20 in the batters’ rankings for the first time in a decade. Kohli, who averaged 15.50 in the recently concluded three-match series against New Zealand where he registered five scores below 20, has slipped to 22nd spot in the batters’ rankings.
The right-hander has now fallen below Babar Azam despite the latter being dropped for the last two Tests against England on the back of a horror run that saw him not pass fifty even once in 18 innings.
While Kohli has fallen outside the top 20, Rishabh Pant has stormed into the top 10 on the back of the twin fifties he scored in Mumbai. Pant is one of two Indian batters in the top 10 in the batters’ rankings, with the other being the fourth-placed Yashasvi Jaiswal, who got displaced from third position by England’s Harry Brook. Joe Root and Kane Williamson are still the top two ranked batters in the world.
In the bowlers’ rankings, Ravindra Jadeja, who took a 10-wicket haul in Mumbai, has made good strides and has broken into the top six. Ravichandran Ashwin, despite enduring an ordinary series against New Zealand, is still fifth, while Jasprit Bumrah has retained third place behind Josh Hazlewood and Kagiso Rabada.
New Zealand’s Ajaz Patel started the third Test outside the top 30 but has jumped 12 places to move to 22nd spot. Another left-arm spinner, South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj, has moved into the top 20 on the back of taking 13 wickets across two Tests against Bangladesh.
As far as ODIs are concerned, West Indies’ Shai Hope has jumped five spots to move to 12th spot. In the second ODI of the ongoing series against England, Hope scored his 17th ODI ton.
On the bowling front, the biggest mover in 50-over cricket is another West Indian, Gudakesh Motie, who has broken into the top 15 by jumping 14 spots.
