Towhid Hridoy became the first Bangladesh player to hit a century against India in an ICC event when he scored exactly 100 runs in the first match for both the teams in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium in Dubai on February 20 (Thursday). However, that was not enough for Bangladesh as they succumbed to a six-wicket loss against the Indian team.
But it was not an easy chase for India as they were 144/4 at one point and took almost 47 overs to reach the target of 229. And Hridoy rued the mistake of his partner at the other end in a record-breaking partnership - Jaker Ali missing out on a big score.
“When we lost the early wicket, I focused on how to make the partnership. When we played, me and Jaker, we just discussed building one big partnership from here. We executed [that], but if Jaker played a big innings, then it [would have been] easier for us [especially when] after 90, I was cramping a bit,” Hridoy said in the post-match press conference.
The duo added 156 for the sixth wicket. But Jaker got out at a time when they needed to accelerate to get the total beyond. Not only did he get out at a wrong time, but also dropped the catch of KL Rahul at a time when India had lost four wickets and one more might have made the match more interesting.
But, Jaker Ali’s drop catch was not a big issue for the team, according to Hridoy, as it is part and parcel of the game.
“It's okay, it's part of the game. Jaker Ali dropped a catch, but it's part of the game. It's not a big deal for us. Hopefully we will come back strongly,” he said.
Bangladesh will next play New Zealand in the Champions Trophy 2025 in Rawalpindi.
