The match 6 of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 between UP Warriorz (UPW) and Delhi Capitals (DC) went right down to the wire, with the latter emerging victorious by seven wickets, with just one delivery to spare. That’s right, the Capitals took 19.5 overs to chase down 166, and UP captain Deepti Sharma blamed her side’s fielding and catching for the defeat.
“It was a good score; as a batting unit, we lost back-to-back wickets; that was the difference between this score and a score around 180-190, which was a winning score on this pitch. They batted well during the batting PP, we came back well with some tight overs, but if we had fielded well, the result could have been quite different,” said Deepti.
Kiran Navgire (27-ball 51) and Chinelle Henry (15-ball 33*) set the Kotambi Stadium in Vadodara on fire and propelled UPW to 166/7 in 20 overs. In response, DC openers Meg Lanning (49-ball 69) and Shafali Verma (16-ball 26) got their team off to a fiery start as well before Annabel Sutherland (35-ball 41*) and Marizanne Kapp (17-ball 29*) got them over the line.
“We love the close finishes. Happy to be on the right side of it. Felt much better out there tonight. Was much more positive right from the first ball. Got my footwork going and it allowed me to get a few boundaries away early,” said DC captain Lanning, who hit 12 fours during her stay in the middle.
“We had some world-class players out there. We have some really good depth in the team. So we feel that whoever is out there can get us over the line. UP Warriorz batted really well at the start but we were able to pull things back nicely. Annabel Sutherland bowled extremely well to take some wickets.”
Sutherland, who also claimed two wickets in the first innings, was named Player of the Match. “Nice to get a win and contribute. We did well to pull it back in the bowling innings. Just reading the conditions a bit, maybe we overpitched a bit. Just trying to use the long boundary,” said Sutherland.
“Meg was going pretty well and then Kappy came in and struck the ball really well. I didn't have to do too much at the other end. As long as I was there, getting the others on strike, felt like we were always going to stay ahead.”
