Good Show With Bat Will Allow Shubman Gill To Flourish As Captain: Saba Karim
Gill's first task will be to lead India in the five-match Test series against England
Shubman Gill was appointed captain of the Indian Test side, and has been thrown in the deep end right away as his first tour will be against England. Gill averages just 14.66 in six innings in England, and former India wicketkeeper Saba Karim believes that if Gill does well with the bat, his captaincy will flourish.
"This is an examination for him. I am sure he's ready and up for it," Karim told PTI Videos
"This is a big opportunity for him as a player. He needs to perform with the bat there, if he is able to do so, then automatically his captaincy will also flourish. I do expect some good results from this young Indian side. The matches will really competitive and I think they are ready for it."
Karim says he is also keen to see how the duo of Karun Nair and Sai Sudharsan go in England.
"Karun played well, he now has experience. Sai seems to have grown in stature as an all-format cricketer. He is gaining experience now, I am excited to see how this combination does in England," Karim said.
The 57-year-old has also backed Arshdeep to perform well in the Test series and backed the management's decision to look beyond Mohammed Shami.
"He [Arshdeep] is a very talented seamer, the previous experience in England will help him and the conditions as well team had to look beyond Shami and I think they picked the right guy, excited to see him in action as well."
India begin their five-match series against England with the first Test at Headingley on June 20 (Friday).
