Women's cricket will make its maiden appearance in the Commonwealth Games, and former Indian skipper Mithali Raj is optimistic about the team's chance in Birmingham later this month.
Mithali, who retired from international cricket last month, believes India has a great chance to finish on the podium provided it has its tactics and strategies in place.
While speaking at the Eden Gardens during the promotion of a movie 'Shabaash Mithu', which is based on her life, she said, "I think before any big event, preparation is very important."
"If you prepare well and because it's a T20 format and Commonwealth Games, if you have your tactics and strategies in place we have a great chance to finish on the podium," she further added.
After a 2-1 win against Sri Lanka in the T20I series, India are building up for the CWG in a positive manner. The Women in Blue are placed in Group A and will take on Australia in their first group stage game on July 29. Pakistan and Barbados are the other two teams in the group.
With Harmanpreet Kaur at the helm, Mithali said the right-handed batter has enough experience to lead India to glory at the Games.
"She has been leading in T20s since 2016, so I think she is experienced enough to lead the team in the Commonwealth Games," she said.
The Birmingham CWG will be held from July 28 to August 8, with the semifinals will be played on August 6 and the summit clash on August 7.
