India were clinical with their batting and bowling in the One-Day International (ODI) series against England and it comes as no surprise that they have completed a 3-0 whitewash. They won the first two ODis by four wickets and and then registered a massive 142-run victory in the third game in Ahmedabad.
Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer and Rohit Sharma were among the runs, while the likes of Harshit Rana and Ravindra Jadeja did well with the ball. In a way, it seems like India had the perfect series heading into the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, starting February 19.
Looking back at the series, India captain Rohit Sharma says that his team barely put a foot wrong across the three matches.
"I don't see there was anything wrong we did this series," Rohit said after the third ODI.
"Obviously, there are certain things we are looking at [to improve], and I am not going to stand here and explain those. It is our job as well to keep some consistency within the squad, and the communication is clear. Obviously any champion team wants to get better every game and move forward from there."
His counterpart, Jos Buttler, feels that they were outplayed by a really good unit. "We were outplayed by a fantastic team. Our approach [with bat] is a right one, just that we haven't executed well," Buttler said.
"They put a great score on the board. Shubman played a great innings. We got off to a great start again, but it was a familiar story again for us. Need to find a way to bat longer. We were up against a really good side that keeps challenging."
Gill, who smashed his seventh century, believes that it was key to remain patient at the start and not lose wickets.
"There was a bit for the fast bowlers. It was seaming, so the chat [with Virat Kohli] was to rotate strike and not lose wickets in powerplay, build on the momentum and take it from there," Gill, who scored 259 runs at 86.33 in the series, said.
This was the final ODI for both sides ahead of the Champions Trophy. India kick start their campaign against Bangladesh in Dubai on February 20. England, on the other hand, face Australia in their opening encounter on February 22 in Lahore.
