India announced their squad for the upcoming five-match T20 International (T20I) series against England on January 11 (Saturday). While Mohammed Shami returned to the Indian team for the first time since the 2023 ODI World Cup, Yashasvi Jaiswal, Shubman Gill and Rishabh Pant were the notable absentees.
So, why weren't they selected?
"Pant, Jaiswal and Gill have been rested from this series to allow them to recover fully after a gruelling five-Test Border-Gavaskar series in Australia, for the ODIs against England and the Champions Trophy in February," the Times of India quoted a source as saying.
While Jaiswal and Pant played all the five Tests, Gill played in just three of them. Jaiswal finished as India's highest run-getter with 391 runs at 43.44, while Pant managed just one fifty on his way to 255 runs. Gill, on the other hand, scored just 93 runs from five innings.
Fast bowler Mohammed Siraj, too, is believed to have been rested for the series. Fellow pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who picked up 32 wickets in Australia, will face a longer stint on the sidelines as he has swelling on his back after he sent down 151.2 overs in the Test series.
India's five-match T20I series against India will get underway from January 22 onwards in Kolkata.
