India Will Miss Washington Sundar In Asia Cup 2025: Former India Batter
Sundar is currently not part of the side's T20I set-up
The last 12 months or so have seen Washington Sundar firmly establish himself as a key player in India’s Test side, and he’s also someone very much part of the team’s ODI set-up. Sundar might have played only 4 ODIs since the start of 2024, but he was a part of the side’s successful campaign in the 2025 Champions Trophy, where he was one of five spinners in the squad.
However, it seems like the 25-year-old is not quite there in T20 cricket, evident by his omission from India’s Asia Cup squad despite the tournament being played in the subcontinent.
India still have a power-packed squad despite Sundar’s absence, but former India batter Mohammad Kaif believes that the side will miss the 25-year-old’s services, due to the balance he brings to the side, being an all-rounder.
“Rohit's team won the T20 World Cup with 3 all-rounders - Axar, Jadeja, Hardik - and that meant 6 proper bowling options and batting till 8. At Asia Cup, with only 2 genuine allrounders - Hardik and Axar. - India will have to find a new winning combination. Washington Sundar will be missed,” Kaif wrote on X.
Being a non-regular in the Indian Premier League (IPL) has also contributed to Sundar not being a part of India’s T20 side. In IPL 2025 for Gujarat Titans (GT), he made only 6 appearances, with a fair few of them coming as an impact substitute. 2020 was the last year Sundar played more than 10 games in an IPL season.
