LSG to announce new captain on January 20th: Reports
The announcement is likely to be made not in Lucknow, the home of the franchise, but in Kolkata
Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) could have their new captain on January 20th (Monday) as the franchise announced a press conference on the same day. The likes of Rishbah Pant, Nicholas Pooran and Aiden Markram will be on the watch as these are the three primary candidates for the leadership role in Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025.
However, the presser will not be in Lucknow, the home of the IPL side, but in Kolkata, the headquarters of the RP Sanjiv Goenka Group (RPSG), owners of the Uttar Pradesh-based team.
Although there is no prior notice as to what the press conference could be about. IANS, an Indian news agency, quoted sources close to the franchise saying that either the captain or the new jersey of the team would be announced. However, there is a huge possibility that it could be both.
Pant and Pooran have a leadership experience of 48 T20s each. While Pant has led sides such as Delhi Capitals and India, Pooran has led MI Emirates, Guyana Amazon Warriors even LSG once and of course the West Indies national team.
South African Markram though has more captaincy experience than both Pant and Pooran as the 30-year-old has captained in 70 T20s and for five different teams including one in IPL (Sunrisers Hyderabad), one in SA20 (Sunrisers Eastern Cape) and two in South Africa’s domestic cricket (Northerns and Titans) apart from the South African senior men’s team.
While Pooran was retained for INR 21 Cr, LSG paid a whooping INR 27 Cr to acquire the services of Pant. Markram though was paid only his base price, INR 2 Cr as LSG got him in just a single bid during IPL 2025 auction.
