India's Probable Playing 11 For 2nd ODI vs Australia In Adelaide

Looking ahead to the second ODI in Adelaide on October 23, India may make at least one change to their playing XI

India were outplayed in the first One-Day International (ODI) of the three-match series against Australia on October 19 in Perth. Opting to bowl on a seamer-friendly surface after winning the toss, Australia immediately seized the initiative, putting India on the back foot from the start.

The Indian top order faltered badly. Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Shubman Gill all fell cheaply as India slumped to 25/3 in the blink of an eye. Frequent rain interruptions and regular wickets further hampered the visitors, who managed only 136/9 in 26 overs. Axar Patel (31 off 38) and KL Rahul (38 off 31) were the only batters to reach 30, while Nitish Kumar Reddy (19* off 11) provided a handy cameo down the order.

In reply, Australia lost Travis Head in the second over, but skipper Mitchell Marsh (46* off 52) anchored the chase with authority. He was well supported by comeback man Josh Philippe, who blazed 37 off 29 balls at No.4, and Matt Renshaw (21*) to guide Australia to a comfortable seven-wicket win with 4.5 overs to spare, taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Looking ahead to the second ODI in Adelaide on October 23, India may make at least one change to their playing XI. Harshit Rana, who conceded 27 runs in four overs, could be replaced by Kuldeep Yadav

The left-arm wristspinner has been in sensational form, claiming 17 wickets in seven games at an astonishing average of 9.29 during the Asia Cup 2025, and was India’s second-highest wicket-taker in the ICC Champions Trophy earlier this year. He also led the wickets tally in India’s recent Test series against the West Indies with 12 scalps at 19.50.

In Perth, India opted for two spin-bowling all-rounders - Axar Patel and Washington Sundar - alongside fast-bowling all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy, prioritising batting depth over Kuldeep’s inclusion. Even if the team wants to maintain that approach, Kuldeep could replace Harshit without needing spin-friendly conditions, ensuring a stronger bowling attack.

And, if India decide to play three frontline pacers alongside Reddy, they could do that by compromising on batting depth by leaving out Washington Sundar for Kuldeep, and also consider Prasidh Krishna as an alternative to Harshit Rana.

However, head coach Gautam Gambhir is likely to stick with batting depth, especially after the top-order failures in the first ODI, meaning changes may be limited despite the bowling concerns.
