India's unbeaten series run and a pair on debut

In this series, our expert statistician answers all your cricket-related queries

Could you please provide details of India’s last eight successful T20I series and who were the captains? – Pratik Desai on Twitter

Since India lost 0-2 to Australia at home in February 2019, they are yet to lose a T20I series. During this period, they have won seven and shared one. Three of their series wins have come away from home. India has now also won their last six T20I series. The details are provided below.

Notes:

-    Against Bangladesh India lost the first match, won the next two.

-    Against Sri Lanka the first match at Guwahati was abandoned with a ball bowled after the toss

-    India’s record during this series winning sequence are played 29, won 20, lost 8, Abandoned (NR) 1

-    Virat Kohli as captain (won 17, lost 7, Abd 1), Rohit Sharma as captain (won 3, lost 1)

How often has a pair put on a hundred-plus stand after the opening wicket failed to add any runs in a T20I match? – Himanshu Shah on Twitter

I presume you are referring to the latest occurrence when Jos Buttler and Dawid Malan put on 130 runs for the second wicket in the deciding T20I match at Ahmedabad after Jason Roy was dismissed without a run on the board. This has occurred only on five occasions in T20I cricket. Interestingly, in all the five occasions the sides were chasing. However, the English pair at Ahmedabad was the first to be involved in a losing cause.

Notes:

- Tobias Visee and Awais Ahmed were dismissed first ball.

- For the record, the highest partnership while batting first is 95 between West Indians Devon Smith and Shiv Chanderpaul, after Chris Gayle was dismissed before a run was scored against Bangladesh at Johannesburg during the 2007 T20 WC. The latter won the match.

Has Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli ever opened the innings for India? – Ranjan Suri on Twitter

Since Virat Kohli has never opened for India in Test matches, it obviously means that Rohit Sharma and Kohli has never opened together in Tests. However, although Kohli has opened on six occasions in ODIs, he has paired with Rohit Sharma only once. This happened in the Hamilton ODI on 28 Jan 2014. With Kohli being dismissed for 2, the pair could just muster 5 runs for the opening wicket. Rohit made a 94-ball 79. The home side won by 7 wickets. Incidentally, this was the first and last time they opened the Indian batting in any format for India until the recent Ahmedabad T20I when they put on 94 runs. The table below has the details.

Afghanistan’s Abdul Malik recently on his Test debut made ducks in each innings he batted. How many batsmen have done this in Test cricket? – S Satish on Facebook

Abdul Malik in the Abu Dhabi Test match against Zimbabwe became the 45th player to achieve this dubious deed of bagging a pair on debut. He incidentally becomes the first Afghan player to do so. For the record, the first to bag a pair on Test debut was Englishman Fred Grace against Australia at the Oval in September 1880. Fred incidentally was the youngest of the three brothers who played in the match along with Edward and the more famous William (WG). Unfortunately, Fred Grace passed away two weeks after this Test match (on Sept 22, 1880), then aged 30. Apparently, his death was caused because of sleeping in a damp hotel bed! Some of the famous Test cricketers who had this misfortune of bagging a pair on debut, include England’s Graham Gooch, New Zealander Ken Rutherford, Pakistani Saeed Anwar and Sri Lankan Marvan Atapattu. And among the current players South African Dean Elgar has managed to do well in Test cricket later in his career. Abdul Malik, meanwhile, becomes the only fifth batsmen to be dismissed for a pair on debut while opening the batting in both innings. The list below has the details.

Note:

Fred Grace in 1880 (see above) made a duck at #2 in the second innings. He however, batted at #9 in the first innings for his first duck!
