Injured Josh Inglis ruled out of Border-Gavaskar Trophy

The 29-year-old suffered a low-grade calf strain while fielding during the fourth Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground

Australia’s wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been ruled out of the fifth and final Border-Gavaskar Trophy Test in Sydney, starting on January 3.

The 29-year-old suffered a low-grade calf strain while fielding during the fourth Test against India at the Melbourne Cricket Ground.

Inglis was yet to feature in the series and was on as a substitute fielder on day four. With Mitchell Marsh struggling for runs in the ongoing series, there was a possibility that Inglis could have featured in the Sydney Test.

He was the sole spare batter in the Australian squad, with all-rounder Beau Webster having a better chance of replacing out-of-form Marsh. Inglis, however, is expected to be fit before the tour of Sri Lanka, where Australia will need his service because of his game against spin.

The two-match series in Sri Lanka will get underway on January 29, but in 22 days in time, Australia are scheduled to travel to the UAE for a pre-tour camp.

Australia are likely to announce Inglis’s replacement before the Sydney Test.
