Injured Washington Sundar to miss at least two IPL 2022 matches

The SRH all-rounder is believed to have torn the webbing on his bowling hand during his side's victory over GT

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) all-rounder Washington Sundar could miss at least a couple of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 games after a split webbing on his bowling hand. As a result of his injury, he could not bowl his full quota of overs against Gujarat Titans (GT) on Monday (April 11).

After a poor outing in the first game of the season against Rajasthan Royals (RR), Sundar has bounced back well in the next three games picking up four wickets at an economy rate of under six.

"Washington has torn the webbing in his right hand, between his thumb and first finger," SRH head coach Tom Moody said at the post-match press conference.

"We must monitor that over the next two-three days. Hopefully, it isn't a significant blow. I'd imagine it'd take probably a week or so to settle down."

Sundar's absence could pave way for leg-spinner Shreyas Gopal or left-arm orthodox bowler J Suchith. They could also turn to Abdul Samad or even Abhishek Sharma to roll their arm over.

With Sundar being the main spinner in the team, SRH have relied on South Africa batter Aiden Markram as their sixth bowling option. "We haven't yet seen the surface turn a huge amount, but as the tournament unfolds, we may see the conditions change slightly where spinners come into the game and then that balance of pace versus spin might change."

Rahul Tripathi was forced to retire hurt after injuring his hamstring against GT. However, Moody has confirmed that it is not a serious injury.

"He's fine, he's just getting cramped," Moody said.

"It's humid conditions and we get him to run to hotspots, so he covers a lot of ground in the first two-three overs. That is something we may need to look at to make sure we get the maximum out of him with the bat because obviously, he is a very valuable player for us."

With the win over GT, SRH have now won two in a row. They take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday (April 15) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai in a bid to make it a hat-trick of wins.
