South Africa are facing a fresh injury scare just days before the second Test against India, with key bowlers Simon Harmer and Marco Jansen reportedly under medical evaluation.
As per reports in News 18, Harmer is nursing a shoulder issue, while Jansen has a minor niggle, leaving the Proteas’ management uncertain about their availability for the Test starting November 22. Both players were examined at Kolkata’s Woodlands Hospital, the same facility where India captain Shubman Gill received treatment during the first Test.
The timing of these injuries is particularly concerning after South Africa’s historic 30‑run win in Kolkata, which was their first Test victory on Indian soil in 15 years. Harmer was the standout performer, taking eight wickets in the match, including 4 for 30 in India’s first innings.
Jansen also made key contributions with three wickets in the first innings and crucial breakthroughs in the second, helping South Africa defend a modest target of 124. Their combined efforts were instrumental in turning the tide in South Africa’s favour.
If either player is ruled out in Guwahati, the team has backup options available. Keshav Maharaj and Senuran Muthusamy could take on the spin duties, while Corbin Bosch and Kagiso Rabada would need to shoulder extra responsibility in the pace attack.
The Proteas’ management will monitor both players closely over the next few days before confirming the final playing XI. The second Test begins on November 22 in Guwahati.
