Virat Kohli could score only 21 off 20 against Chennai Super Kings in the first game of the Indian Premier League 2024 on March 22 (Friday), but that was enough to make him the first Indian batter to cross the 12000-run mark in T20s.
Kohli got to the landmark by working Ravindra Jadeja towards square leg in the seventh over. Overall, Kohli becomes the sixth batter after Chris Gayle, Shoaib Malik, Kieron Pollard, Alex Hales and David Warner to reach the landmark.
It took Kohli 360 innings to hit the 12000-run mark, only behind Gayle, who got there in 345 innings. He could have gotten to the landmark much before but Kohli didn’t play a single T20I for India for almost 14 months
He has eight centuries and 91 fifties in this format. The next Indian on the list is Rohit Sharma with 11156 runs in T20s.
Kohli is also the leading run-getter in the IPL, having amassed 7284 runs in 230 innings at an average of 37.16 and a strike rate of 129.93.
