The good and bad of Virat Kohli’s 8th IPL hundred

Here are a few interesting numbers from his knock against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur

In terms of run-scoring, this season keeps getting better and better for Virat Kohli, who has now scored a whopping 316 runs already in IPL 2024 — in just five innings.

On April 6 (Saturday), Kohli brought up his eighth IPL century and recorded his joint-highest score in the competition. However, at the same time, en route to the ton, the veteran also equalled an unwanted record.

Here are a few interesting numbers from Kohli's knock against Rajasthan Royals in Jaipur.

First batter to breach the 7500-run mark in IPL history

At the Sawai Mansingh Stadium in Jaipur, Kohli became the first batter in IPL history to breach the 7500-run mark. He’s already the only batter in the IPL to have racked up over 7,000 runs. Now, with every game, he’s steering well clear of the rest.

Kohli, as of this moment, has scored 824 more runs than any other batter in the tournament’s history.

Most runs in IPL history

Virat Kohli - 7579*

Shikhar Dhawan - 6755

David Warner - 6545

Rohit Sharma - 6280

Joint-most boundaries hit in IPL history

Last week, Kohli became just the second batter after Dhawan to hit 900 or more boundaries in the IPL. Today, he equalled Dhawan after smashing 16 boundaries against the Royals.

David Warner - 896

Third-most centuries in T20 history

Prior to the game tonight, only two batters had hit nine or more centuries in T20 cricket: Chris Gayle and Babar Azam. Well, post his ton against the Royals, Kohli joined the elusive list to become the batter with the third-most hundreds in T20 history. He has a long way to go to catch the Universe Boss, but Kohli is now only two shy of Babar, who has hit 11 T20 centuries.

Joint-slowest hundred in IPL history

On the night, Kohli also ended up equalling an unwanted record. He ended up registering the joint-slowest hundred in IPL history after bringing up his ton off 67 balls. He equalled Manish Pandey, who in IPL 2009 struck a ton of 67 balls against Deccan Chargers, also coincidentally representing Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Fifth batter to face 70+ balls in an IPL innings

Against RR, Kohli became only the fifth batter in IPL’s 16-year history to face 70 or more balls in an innings. In fact, before tonight, in the past 14 years, there had only been two instances of batters facing 70+ balls in an innings.

In another slightly unwanted record, Kohli’s SR of 154.29 was the second-slowest for a batter in the IPL after facing 70+ balls.
