The suspense is over as Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) have confirmed that Ajinkya Rahane will be leading the franchise in the 2025 edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Rahane was a base price pick at ₹1.50 Cr at the IPL 2025 mega auction but in what comes as a slight surprise, the veteran has been appointed as KKR’s new skipper ahead of both Venkatesh Iyer and Rinku Singh.
“We are delighted to have someone like Ajinkya Rahane, who brings his experience and maturity as a leader,” KKR CEO Venky Mysore said.
Meanwhile, Iyer has been appointed the side’s vice-captain. The all-rounder was believed to be the front-runner for captaincy but he’ll instead serve as Rahane’s deputy for the 2025 edition.
“Venkatesh Iyer has been a franchise player for KKR and brings a lot of leadership qualities. We are confident that they will combine well as we start the defense of our title,” Mysore further added.
Speaking on the back of being appointed skipper, Rahane said, “It’s an honour to be asked to lead KKR, which has been one of the most successful franchises in the IPL. I think we have an excellent and balanced squad. I look forward to working with everyone and taking up the challenge of defending our title.”
Considered one of the best leaders in the country, Rahane has led 25 times in the IPL in total. He captained Rajasthan Royals (RR) across IPL 2018 and IPL 2019 and led Rising Pune Super Giant (RPSG) in a solitary game in IPL 2017. Last year, he led Mumbai to their first Irani Cup title in 27 years.
