Usually a calm character, Shubman Gill lost his cool and took it out on the umpires while leading Gujarat Titans (GT) against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) in Ahmedabad on May 2 (Friday).
In the 14th over of the chase, GT decided to review a leg-before call against Abhishek Sharma after it was given not out by the umpires. Prasidh Krishna was in the middle of a superb spell, and a wicket at that juncture would have been well deserved.
The ball rapped Abhishek on the pads on the full with Prasidh coming over the wicket to the left-hander. Upon review, it was seen that the ball indeed hit Abhishek on the full, but the impact was outside the leg stump.
However, Gill was supposedly of the opinion that the ball did in fact pitch before hitting the batter. If that was the case, then the on-field umpire's decision would have stood as the ball would have pitched outside leg.
Abhishek was clearly in a lot of pain after bing hit on the toe. He went to ground and the physio came out to attend to him. It took away a huge chunk of time. Gill's displeasure could also stem from the fact that such a dealy could result in a penalty where in he would be forced to keep an additional fielder inside the ring. There's a chance that Gill was not happy with the umpires for allowing it.
There's still no clarity as to why Gill was unhappy, and he made it known to the on-field umpires and also the fourth umpire on the boundary. The funny part was that an official timeout was called just two balls later after this long unscheduled break.
GT are well on top of this game and are on course to a massive victory after setting SRH a target of 225.
