When the trio of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and Ravichandran Ashwin announced their retirement, there was a bit of doubt over India’s fortunes in the five-match Test series against England. While most expected the team to have a barren run, Shubman Gill’s men shocked the world, coming away with a 2-2 scoreline after their thrilling six-run win at The Oval.
It was a series that saw multiple people rise to the challenge, be it Mohammed Siraj’s 23 wickets, Gill’s 753-run series or Ravindra Jadeja’s 516 runs. Even when the Men in Blue did not have their best bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, they pulled off two crazy wins, including winning against all odds at The Oval.
In the aftermath of the drawn series, Indian head coach Gautam Gambhir has admitted that the ideology of the team won’t be ‘individual-centric’.
“It's going to be the ideology of this Test team, where it won't be about individual-centric, it will be about the team,” Gambhir said in a video posted by BCCI.
In the process, Gambhir’s Indian team became the second team to draw a Test series in England, and the first Indian team to win in Birmingham.
“The way the boys have fought. I've always been a big believer that you should always get what you deserve, not what you want. And I think the guys deserved it,” he added.
