Shubman Gill had a historic start to his Test captaincy career, as the Indian No.4 batter amassed 754 runs in the recently concluded five-match Test series against England. Whilst there’s no denying that he was India’s best batter in the series, former Indian batter Ajay Jadeja begs to differ.
The former Indian batter reckoned that Ravindra Jadeja was far more consistent than even Gill. In the five-match series, Jadeja had an all-time high series, as the left-hander smashed 516 runs at an average of 86.00, including six fifty-plus scores.
“He has been more consistent than even Shubman Gill. He had four innings that didn’t end, because the batting ended from the other end. In the entire series, there were only two innings where he got out early,” said Ajay Jadeja, reported the Indian Express.
Jadeja also added that everything changed for the current Indian all-rounder after the Lord’s Test, when he was unbeaten on 61. In the very next clash, the 36-year-old smashed 20 and 107* to help India draw the Test in Manchester.
Even at The Oval, the venue for India’s last Test, the left-hander scored a crucial 53, which ultimately allowed India to score 396 and set England a target of 374. Jadeja’s 53 went a long way in India, drawing the series 2-2.
“If we try to remember his moments, it started with Lord’s, where you couldn’t win for sure, but he and (Mohammed) Siraj fought there. A change was seen there. The fortitude started from there. Then he kept standing in the next match and drew the match. Then he scored runs in this match (last Test) as well,” he observed.
