Two misfiring teams meet for the 1st time in this season of CPL. Jamaica Tallawahs and St Kitts and Nevis Patriots need a win desperately in their clash to stay alive and have a chance further in the tournament. Especially the Patriots, who are at the bottom of the table with a very poor net run rate. In any case, Patriots will be exhilarated over the fact that the Tallawahs haven’t been able to beat them in the last 4 consecutive matches in CPL.

The average first innings score at Port of Spain in CPL 2019 was around the 146 marks. That slowness seems to be continuing this time around as well. Teams batting first so far this season have managed an average first innings total of only 123 at the venue. Teams have lost an average of 8 wickets in the 1st innings.
The average scores suggest that it’s not been easy out there for batsmen at Queen’s Park Oval. They have scored only 19.1 runs per wicket in CPL 2020 with the bowlers managing a wicket every 17.5 balls. Since 2019 in CPL, batsmen have scored at a strike rate of 122, which is the 2nd lowest at a venue.
Though the Queen’s Park Oval surface was on the slower side in CPL 2019, the spinners did not have the level of success that they have had this season. The numbers suggest that you should opt for a bowling heavy setup for this encounter.
In 12 innings, they have picked 58.6% of the wickets to fall so far this season striking every 16.8 deliveries as compared to pacers who have a strike rate of 20. The spinners have also maintained an excellent economy rate of 5.6 this season.
Both the teams need to pull up their socks, especially the Patriots. Everything has been going wrong for both of them when it comes to their batting. Hence, packing it with bowlers would be advisable.
The Tallawahs bowlers have been excellent till now in this season. Their runs/wicket of 18.6 is the best among all the teams. Just like most of the teams this season, Tallawahs spinners have bagged the most percentage of wickets (63.6%). On the other hand, Patriots (64.3%) alongside Zouks (56.1%), are the only two teams in which the pacers have more percentage of wickets.
The Patriots spinners seem to have found some rhythm after the shift to Port of Spain. In Tarouba their spinners had bagged 3 wickets at a balls/dismissal ratio of 38.0. But, in Port of Spain, they have picked wickets at balls/wicket ratio of 16.0.
Mujeeb, Lamichhane and Jaggessar will be sold like hotcakes. Patriots captain who has been their best bowler is also one of the considerations. Andre Russell and Sohail Tanvir are the top choices for allrounders. As for batsman, the likes of Lewis are a must alongside the wicketkeeper Glenn Phillips.
There could be few interesting match-ups
CHADWICK WALTON vs SHELDON COTTRELL
The Jamaican opener has a had horrid CPL 2020 season and his record against Cottrell adds to the misery. In 10 innings he has faced Cottrell, he has got out to him on 5 occasions and averages only 11.8
ANDRE RUSSELL vs RAYAD EMRIT
In a tussle between two skippers, Emrit has had the better of Russell in T20s. The dashing finisher has got out to Emrit twice in the 6 innings he has faced. Russell has an average of 6.8 against Emrit.
EVIN LEWIS vs OSHANE THOMAS
Lewis has been Patriots best batsman this season, getting him early would surely dent the confidence of Patriots batting. In order to do that, Oshane Thomas is the perfect bowler. Lewis has an average of 9.3 against him after facing him in 5 innings.
CHRIS LYNN vs SANDEEP LAMICHHANE
It is no surprise that Lynn struggles against the spinners. When facing Lamichhane is T20s, it is the same scenario. In the 4 innings he has got out twice at an average of 3.0 and a strike rate of 40.0.
MUJEEB UR RAHMAN: The Afghan mystery spinner surely is having a sensational debut season of CPL. His numbers this season have been staggering. He has 12 wickets which is the most by a bowler this season at a bowling average of 6.8 and balls/dismissal ratio of 10.0. Both his average and balls/dismissal ratio are the best among bowlers with 2 or more wickets this season.
Our Criclytics player projector predicts Mujeeb would pick 0-3 wickets in Match-18.
EVIN LEWIS: If something positive is to happen this season for Patriots, a lot relies on their best batsman. Evin Lewis has scored 161 runs this season, the 2nd joint-most by a batsman. He has scored those runs at a healthy strike rate of 135.3.
His record against the Tallawahs has also been good. In the 13 innings, he has faced against them in CPL, he has scored 384 at a stunning strike rate of 173.8. Combination of both, this season form and his good run against the Tallawahs, Evin Lewis is one of the X-factors. His presence in the squad could fetch a lot of points
Our Criclytics player projector predicts, Lewis would score 13-36 runs in Match 18.
SANDEEP LAMICHHANE: Two young spinners of Jamaica have been hunting in pairs. If Mujeeb has set his standards, Sandeep isn’t far from him this season. The leg spinners from Nepal has 7 wickets at a balls/dismissal ratio of 17.1 and bowling average of 12.7. His average of 12.7 is the 3rd best among bowlers with 5 or more wickets.
Our Criclytics player projector predicts Sandeep would pick 0-3 wickets in Match 18.
RAYAD EMRIT: The Patriots skipper has taken the burden on his shoulders and has been leading from the front when it comes to the bowling department. His 7 wickets in this season is the most by a Patriot bowler. Those 7 wickets have come for every 14 runs, which is the least runs/wicket conceded by a pacer in this season. On a surface where the spinners are stamping their authority, Emrit’s returns are certain X-factor.
Our Criclytics player projector predicts Emrit would pick 0-3 wickets in Match 18.
