England opener Jason Roy has pulled out of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 due to the challenges of staying in a bio-secure bubble over an extended period of time. Roy is the first player to pull out from the tournament.
Roy was picked by Gujarat Titans (GT) for his base price of INR 1.5 crore in the IPL auction. He was among the top players in the recently-concluded Pakistan Super League (PSL), in which he slammed two fifties and a century - again played in a strict bio-secure bubble.
The opening batter also backed out in IPL 2020, when Delhi Capitals (DC) picked him at his base price of INR 1.5 crore. Titans would have been Roy's fourth IPL franchise, having already turned up for Gujarat Lions (2017), Delhi daredevils (2018) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (2021). After initially going unsold, Roy was drafted as Mitchell Marsh's replacement in 2021.
In his 13 IPL matches, Roy has scored 329 runs at 29.90 to go with a strike-rate of 129.01, which includes a couple of fifties.
The IPL 2022 will be 10-team affair, which will also played in a bio-secure bubble. Maharashtra will host all the matches this season, which will be played across three venues - the Wankhede Stadium - Mumbai, DY Patil - Navi Mumbai and the MCA Stadium - Pune.
