India’s ace paceman Jasprit Bumrah won’t feature in the three-match One-Day International (ODI) series against England, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) confirmed on February 4 (Wednesday). The 31-year-old is currently recovering from a back injury.
When the squad was announced for the England ODIs and the Champions Trophy, Bumrah’s name was included only for the third ODI on February 12 in Ahmedabad and the 50-over event.
However, when the BCCI announced that Varun Chakaravarthy would be added to the Indian squad for the England ODIs, Bumrah’s name was missing from the squad. There was no mention of Bumrah in the media release.
His absence and the uncertainty surrounding his fitness will concern everyone in Indian cricket ahead of the Champions Trophy, which starts on February 19.
Bumrah, who sustained a back injury in the fifth Test against Australia in Sydney, is currently in Bangalore for fresh scans on his injury. With him now set to miss the third ODI against England, the reports might not have been as promising as the team management would have expected.
Bumrah is one of three specialist pacers in India’s Champions Trophy squad, with Mohammed Shami and Arshdeep Singh being the other two. Interestingly, Mohammed Siraj, India’s highest wicket-taking pacer in ODIs since the start of 2023, was left out of the side’s CT2025 squad.
