The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy will go down as one of the most batter-friendly series in Test history. It saw Indian skipper Shubman Gill notch up a new all-time high, as the Indian No.4 finished the series with 754 runs, the second-most for a visiting captain in England.
On the flipside, the series also saw Joe Root surpass multiple legendary figures, such as Ricky Ponting, Kumar Sangakkara and Rahul Dravid’s record to be the second-highest run-scorer in Test history.
Hence, when former England bowler Stuart Broad was put to the task of picking one between Root and Gill, he was left bamboozled.
“Oh, piss off. You want me to choose a name? Yeah. Joe and Shubman Gill... I can see the headlines now,” Broad told Buttler on their podcast ‘For The Love of Cricket’.
“Shubman Gill’s just scored the most runs as a Test captain behind Don Bradman, and Joe Root’s gone second in the all-time list (for most runs in Tests). Scored three hundreds back-to-back and his 39th Test match ton,” he added.
Ultimately, Broad picked his former teammate Root.
“Well, only because I’ve got Joe Root’s mobile number and don’t want the abuse, I’m going to go with Joe Root,” he added.
The five-match Test series ended in a 2-2 draw, after India’s six-run win at The Oval.
