Joe Root just can’t stop scoring against India. On Day 3 of the fourth Test at Old Trafford, the 34-year-old notched up his 12th Test century against them - the most by any batter in history.
This was also Root’s 38th Test hundred overall, putting him behind only Sachin Tendulkar (51), Jacques Kallis (45) and Ricky Ponting (41) on the all-time list.
Walking in at 197/2 in the 39th over, Root looked in complete control. He stitched together a solid 144-run stand with Ollie Pope, and even after two quick wickets by Washington Sundar, Root stayed composed.
He continued ticking the scoreboard alongside captain Ben Stokes, eventually bringing up his hundred with a boundary off Anshul Kamboj in the 96th over.
Having already gone past Rahul Dravid and Jacques Kallis's run tally earlier in the day, Root also surpassed Ricky Ponting to become the second-highest run-getter in Test cricket. He got past Ponting when he reached 120 just before the end of the second session.
Root eventually got out to Ravindra Jadeja after scoring 150 off 248 deliveries.
