Kane Williamson's one-of-a-kind innings hands Gujarat their first defeat

Here are a few noteworthy stats from Match 21 of IPL 2022 between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Gujarat Titans at the DY Patil Stadium in Mumbai

Dismal first over from Bhuvneshwar Kumar

One of the most experienced bowlers in the shortest format of the game, Bhuvneshwar Kumar started the innings in a horrendous fashion by conceding 17 runs in the first over of the game.

After a thick outside edge that raced to the boundary cushions on the first delivery, the speedster erred in line and conceded five wides down the leg-side twice in the over along with yet another wide to make it a 16-run over.

In addition to the 16 runs, which was second-most expensive over bowled by a Hyderabad player in the history of the Indian Premier League, there was a leg-bye making it 17 off the first six deliveries.

Dale Steyn, the fast bowling coach of the side, endured a similar outing against the Royal Challengers Bangalore and conceded 17 runs at Hyderabad in 2015, which is the most expensive over.

Hardik's special hundred

After being asked to bat first, the Titans were in a spot of bother by losing two wickets in the powerplay with the score reading 47 runs. However, the skipper of the side walked in at number four and anchored the innings by scoring a half-century off 42 deliveries to help the side amass 162 runs in the first innings.

En route to his crucial fifty, studded with four boundaries and a solitary six off Aiden Markram, the 28-year old joined an elite list of players to become the 16th Indian player to smash 100 sixes in the extravaganza.

Sloppy show with the ball by the Orange Army

Over the years, the Orange Army is known to be one of the most disciplined bowling attacks in the league and is known for its immaculate consistency.

However, tonight was a lot different for the team as the bowlers struggled with their line and length and conceded 22 extras, the most by them since the inception of the tournament.

In 2015, against the Challengers, they conceded 16 extras, which is the second-highest, followed by 15 against the Super Kings in the same season.

Williamson leads from the front

One of the talking points in the Sunrisers' last win against the Chennai outfit was the lack of intent showcased by Kane Williamson in the modest run chase.

While there is no doubt that the skipper of the Orange Army has been assigned the responsibility of anchoring the innings, the right-handed batter played a one-of-a-kind innings to power the team to a comprehensive win.

The 31-year old smashed 57 off 46 deliveries with two boundaries and four massive hits over the fence, making it the first-ever instance of the Kiwi batter scoring more sixes than fours in an innings with a minimum of 50 runs.

Lockie Ferguson endures a day to forget

While the skipper of the Black Caps showcased his class with a sublime knock, his teammate from the national side, Lockie Ferguson, endured a day to forget.

The right-arm pacer conceded 46 runs in his four overs at an economy rate of 11.5 runs per over, making it the third-most-expensive spell by him in the high-voltage tournament.

The 30-year old conceded 56 against the Super Kings at an economy rate of 14 at Dubai in 2021, which is the highest, followed by 54 against the same opposition in 2020.
