Mathews named in Hasaranga-led Sri Lanka squad for T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka are named in Group D in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 alongside Bangladesh, South Africa, Netherlands, and Nepal

Sri Lanka have announced their squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup under the captaincy of Wanindu Hasaranga, whereas middle-order batter Charith Asalanka has been named as his deputy.

Banking on the experience of veteran Angelo Mathews, who returned to the T20I set up earlier this year in January after an absence of nearly three years, Sri Lanka will be aiming for a spirited performance in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024.

The likes of Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka, Kamindu Mendis, and Sadeera Samarawickrama are entrusted with the responsibility of handling the top-order batting, whereas Dushmantha Chameera, Nuwan Thushara, Matheesha Pathirana, Dilshan Madushanka, and Maheesh Theekshana will be taking care of the bowling department.

Dunith Wellalage, who impressed everyone with a match-winning spell against India in the 2023 Asia Cup, has also been named in the squad and will be spearheading the all-round responsibilities alongside Mathews, Dasun Shanaka, and Dhananjaya de Silva.

Sri Lanka are named in Group D in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 alongside Bangladesh, South Africa, Netherlands, and Nepal. They’ll start their campaign against South Africa at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York on June 3.
