Mayank Agarwal called up for Edgbaston Test against England

The India batter will be allowed to link up with his teammates right away without having to quarantine

Mayank Agarwal has been added to the Indian squad for Edgbaston Test against England, starting July 1, according to a report on ESPNCricinfo. Agarwal was initially left out of the squad but injuries to KL Rahul and doubts over Rohit Sharma's participation due to Covid-19 has handed Agarwal a lifeline.

Agarwal is expected to fly out to England on Monday (June 27) and will be allowed to link up with his teammates as the UK government has dropped all quarantine mandates. He last played in the Test series at home against Sri Lanka, where he managed just 59 runs in two Tests at 19.66.

He led Punjab Kings (PBKS) in the IPL, where his team finished sixth.  Agarwal had a season to forget as he managed just 196 runs at 16.33 to go with a strike-rate of 122.50.

He also played in the Ranji Trophy where his side Karnataka lost to Uttar Pradesh. Overall. Agarwal has scored 1,488 runs from 21 Tests at an average of 41.33, which includes four centuries and six fifties.

India lead the Test series against England 2-1, before a Covid outbreak last year saw the fifth and final Test in Manchester called off.  Following the "fifth Test", India will play three ODIs and as many T20Is, starting July 7.
