Rohit Sharma tests positive for Covid-19 ahead of Edgbaston Test

The India captain did not bat during the second innings of the warm-up game against Leicestershire as a result

India captain Rohit Sharma has tested positive for Covid-19, according to the Rapid Antigen Test (RAT) he underwent on Saturday (June 25), the BCCI has confirmed. Rohit did not open the batting in the second innings of the warm-up game against Leicestershire but scored 25 in the first. It was Srikar Bharat who opened in Rohit's place.

He is currently in isolation and is being monitored by the BCCI medical team. He is due to take an RT-PCR test on Sunday (June 26), which will confirm the severity of the infection.

Whether or not he recovers in time before the start of the "one-off" Test against England at Edgbaston, starting July 1 is unknown. According to the current protocols, Rohit will have to isolate himself for five days in his hotel. Ravichandran Ashwin's arrival in England too was delayed as he had tested positive for the virus. Virat Kohli too had tested positive but is believed to have recovered before taking off from India.

The ongoing England-New Zealand Test too was rocked by many positive Covid results with the latest causality being England's batting coach Marcus Trescothick, who remains absent from the Headingley Test.

India are already without their other opener KL Rahul, who misses out due to a groin injury. Rohit was India's best batter on the England tour last year before covid-19 scares in the Indian camp forced the final Test to be rescheduled. He scored 368 runs at 52.27, which includes a ton at The Oval.
