All five Tests of the recently concluded England vs India series went the full distance to Day 5, producing plenty of memorable moments, but former England captain Michael Atherton believes the overall standard still fell short of the legendary 2005 Ashes.
“I don’t think the quality was as good as ’05. I don’t think I’ve seen a better series than the ’05 Ashes. It was a great team on the decline and the emerging team, absolutely great players at the top of their game,” Atherton said on Sky Sports.
“But it was probably the best series since ’05. The 2023 Ashes was fantastic, but I’ll put this series as the best series since ’05 because of those dramatic moments, like Woakes and like Rishabh Pant.”
The Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy ended in a gripping 2-2 draw, captivating cricket fans around the globe.
In his maiden Test series as captain, Shubman Gill piled up 754 runs at an average of 75.40, smashing four centuries - including a marathon 269 in the second Test. Mohammed Siraj spearheaded India’s bowling attack, finishing as the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps across the five matches.
