Australia have left out Marnus Labuschagne from their ODI squad for the three-match home series against India, beginning on October 19. In-form batter Matt Renshaw has been rewarded for his consistent domestic performances and could make his ODI debut, alongside all-rounder Mitchell Owen.
Fast-bowling spearhead Mitchell Starc, who has now retired from T20Is, also returns to the ODI set-up after being rested for the South Africa series in August. Apart from Starc and Renshaw, Matthew Short and Owen are back after recovering from their respective injuries. Aaron Hardie, Matthew Kuhnemann, and Labuschagne are the ones to miss out.
Labuschagne’s omission doesn’t come as a huge surprise - he has gone 13 ODIs without a single 50-plus score and would likely have missed the South Africa tour as well if Short hadn’t been injured.
Meanwhile, Renshaw - primarily an opener in red-ball cricket - is expected to feature in the middle order in the 50-over format, potentially taking on the role previously occupied by Steven Smith and Labuschagne.
The left-hander boasts strong List A credentials, having amassed 2,756 runs in 74 innings at an average of 41.13 and a strike rate of 95.03. Last season, he scored 305 runs at an average of 50 for Queensland in the domestic one-day competition, followed by impressive knocks of 80, 106, and 62 against Sri Lanka A.
With Pat Cummins still recovering from lumbar bone stress ahead of the upcoming Ashes, T20I skipper Mitchell Marsh will continue to lead the ODI side.
Wicketkeeper-batter Alex Carey will miss the opening ODI in Perth to play for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield. Both Carey and Josh Philippe have been left out of the T20I squad that recently defeated New Zealand 2-0, with Nathan Ellis and Josh Inglis returning.
Cameron Green has been named in the ODI squad but will skip the five T20Is starting October 29 to focus on Test preparation for the Ashes. Glenn Maxwell remains sidelined after fracturing his wrist ahead of the New Zealand series.
"We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the back end of the series as individuals prepare for the summer through Sheffield Shield cricket," said chair of selectors George Bailey.
"The majority of the T20 squad will remain together as it's an important period in the build towards the World Cup next year, however, we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously prepare certain individuals for the Test series ahead."
India have already named their squads for both the ODI and T20I series. Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli will return to action for the first time since the Champions Trophy 2025, but it’s Shubman Gill who will lead the ODI side after Rohit’s removal as captain.
