In Match 6 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 against Rajasthan Royals (RR) at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium in Guwahati on March 26 (Wednesday), Moeen Ali created an embarrassing record for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in the tournament history.
Opening the innings in place of Sunil Narine, who was ruled out of the contest because of illness, Moeen could only score 5 off 12 deliveries in the 152-run chase. The left-hander got run out on the first delivery of the seventh over.
If we are talking about all KKR openers in the IPL, Moeen scored the joint-lowest runs in the powerplay (minimum 10 balls faced).
The 37-year-old got only 4 off 11 balls in the powerplay, equalling Sourav Ganguly (4 off 14 vs CSK, 2009, Centurion) and Rahul Tripathi (4 off 10 vs PBKS, 2020, Abu Dhabi).
That’s not it, this is also the fourth-slowest knock (strike rate 41.67) played by a KKR opener (at least 10 balls) after Sourav Ganguly (28.57), Rahul Tripathi (40) and Manvinder Bisla (40.91).
This was just the third time Moeen was opening the innings in the IPL. In three innings, he only has 19 runs at an average of 6.33 and a strike rate of 86.4.
Moeen, however, was impressive with the ball in the first innings. The offspinner finished with figures of 2/23, dismissing Yashasvi Jaiswal and Nitish Rana.
