Mohammed Azharuddin picks Rohit Sharma as his preferred Test captaincy candidate

Indian selectors are in a fix to decide the next Test captain after Virat Kohli decided to step down from the role after losing the South Africa series 2-1. While Rohit Sharma, as the vice-captain, might be picked, given his age, there is a section of former cricketers who believe KL Rahul might fit in the role. With Rishabh Pant being the only other long-term candidate, he might as well come into contention.

Mohammed Azharuddin has opined that he would pick Rohit Sharma as the skipper and if he declines to take up the job, it should land on Rishabh Pant's shoulders.

"If Rohit Sharma declines then it should go to Rishab Pant," Azharuddin replied on a question asked by a Twitter follower.

India will take on Sri Lanka in a two-match Test series before traveling to England in June to complete the Pataudi Trophy that the side is leading 2-1. After losing South Africa, the last WTC finalist have a considerable amount of pressure on them to make up for the lost grounds. The selectors are supposed to declare the new captain in the second week of May.
