Needed a few more runs to make it more competitive: Faf du Plessis

RCB could only manage a par score of 172, which RR chased down with an over to spare

Royal Challengers Bengaluru skipper Faf du Plessis admitted that his team were at least 20 runs short after losing to Rajasthan Royals in the Eliminator of the Indian Premier League 2024 on May 22 (Wednesday).

When asked to bat, RCB struggled against Trent Boult in the powerplay. The left-arm seamer got rid of du Plessis before Yuzvendra Chahal accounted for Virat Kohli. Rajat Patidar and Mahipal Lomror did put up some fight, but RCB could only manage a par score of 172/8.

In reply, Rajasthan chased down the target in 19 overs. None of the RR batters went past the 50-run mark but the likes of Yashasvi Jaiswal, Riyan Parag and Shimron Hetmyer all chipped in with handy cameos before Rovman Powell finished the job in the penultimate over.

“With the dew coming in, we thought we were short with the bat. Needed a few more runs to make it more competitive. Credit to the boys for fighting it out,” said du Plessis at the post-match presentation ceremony.

“If you look at naturally assessing the pitch, it looked like a 180-pitch. But we found out this season, with the one extra batter and long line-ups, it can be challenging. We knew we had to score more to challenge them.”

The Royal Challengers came into this game having won their last six league encounters. They won only one of their first eight matches but made a superb comeback in the second half of the tournament.

“A lot of teams would have. Their wheels would have fallen off after 1 from 9. But we made sure to gave our best and to come back like that - six games in a row - takes a lot of heart. We weren't special tonight in terms of pushing the extra runs."
