Nepal and Oman, without even completing their mandated five matches in the Super Six round of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup Asia & EAP Qualifier, 2025 for the qualification for the 2026 T20 World Cup, qualified for the mega event to be held in India and Sri Lanka.
The situation so happened that both teams, even before facing each other, had three wins (one carry-forward from group stage combined) each, meaning that they had six points on the points table. Among the other four teams in the Super Six, only one could have either reached or crossed the six-point mark.
With three places up for grabs for the T20 World Cup 2026 from this qualifying event, and only one team being able to cross them meant that Nepal and Oman qualified with two of their matches remaining in the Super Six stage.
With these two qualifications, only one place remains to be filled in the 20-team tournament. The last place would be decided between the UAE, Japan and Qatar. While the UAE has four points from four games, Japan and Qatar have two from three and four games each.
Since Japan have to play UAE and Oman, they can reach a maximum of six points and qualify. UAE can also reach a maximum of six points only, while Qatar can only have four points and still qualify.
For Qatar to qualify, they need a big win against Samoa in their last group stage game and then hope that Japan beat UAE and is then beaten by Oman, making sure that neither Japan’s nor UAE’s net run rate gets better than theirs. It is near to impossible but cannot be ruled out.
So, realistically, only Japan and the UAE are in a fight for the last spot in the Men’s T20 World Cup 2026.
