Glenn Phillips’ stint with Gujarat Titans (GT) turned from bad to worse, with the all-rounder now ruled out of IPL 2025 with a groin injury on April 12 (Saturday). The New Zealand all-rounder was on the field in GT’s away clash against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6 (Sunday) when he injured himself while attempting a run-out.
"Glenn Phillips has returned to New Zealand following a groin injury he sustained during the match against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) on April 6. Gujarat Titans wish Glenn a speedy recovery," GT said in a release.
Unfortunately for Phillips, that one piece of fielding effort put an end to his entire IPL 2025 stint, as he now has to return home. It comes on the back of another blow for Gujarat when their star overseas pacer, Kagiso Rabada, flew back to South Africa on a personal emergency.
While Phillips has never been a part of GT’s plans this season, his presence in the squad really gave them a chance to alter their plans according to the situation. Thus far in the season, the Titans have preferred to play two overseas players in the starting XI, bringing on the West Indian batter Sherfane Rutherford as an impact player.
Phillips last played IPL way back in 2023 for SRH, where he could only score 39 runs across five encounters, averaging 7.80 with the bat. But with his recent form seeing a shift, Phillips would have hoped to turn his IPL fortune around with Gujarat.
