Bangladesh on August 22 (Friday) announced their squad for the Asia Cup 2025, which will be played in the T20 format from September 9 in the United Arab Emirates (UAE). Litton Das has been named captain of the 16-member squad that will take part in the 8-team tournament.
Surprisingly enough, Najmul Hossain Shanto, Bangladesh’s last Test captain, and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, the country’s current ODI captain, who were part of the team’s last T20I series against Sri Lanka, which resulted in a historic away win under the captaincy of Das, have been put in the reserve list for the tournament.
While Shanto resigned at the end of the Test leg of the Sri Lanka tour, Bangladesh are yet to name a Test skipper, while Mehidy is the current ODI captain, having been chosen for the role ahead of the Sri Lanka tour.
Amongst the new names in the Bangladesh squad for the all-important continental showpiece event are wicketkeeper batter Nur-ul-Hasan, batters Saif Hassan, spinner Nasum Ahmed and bowling all-rounder Mohammed Saifuddin.
Along with Mehidy and Shanto, Soumya Sarkar and Tanvir Islam, who bowled brilliantly in the ODIs against Sri Lanka, have been put in the reserve list. The same team will also play in a three-match T20I series at home against the Netherlands.
