An extraordinary streak held by Kane Williamson has finally come to an end, with New Zealand’s talismanic batter getting dismissed in single digits in ODI cricket for the first time over SIX YEARS.
Williamson was dismissed for 1 against Sri Lanka in Mount Maunganui on January 5, 2019, and then went on an outrageous run, not getting dismissed in single digits for 35 consecutive innings in ODIs. The right-hander, during this period, amassed 1,774 runs at an average of 63.35.
The 34-year-old looked primed to extend the streak, walking into the 2025 Champions Trophy with scores of 34, 133*, 58, and 69, but was stunned by Naseem Shah, who dismissed him for 1.
Williamson just lasted two balls as he was squared up by an absolute dream delivery by Naseem, who got a ball to angle in and then move off the seam. It took Williamson’s outside edge and wicketkeeper Mohammad Rizwan made no mistake.
In his last 50 innings in ODIs, this was only the fourth time Williamson had fallen for a single-digit score.
The dismissal of New Zealand’s talismanic batter put the hosts right on top in the curtain-raiser. New Zealand were reduced to 40/2 at the fall of Williamson’s wicket, with Naseem and Abrar Ahmed taking one wicket apiece.
