The much-awaited tri-series between Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa got underway today in Lahore, and the Gaddafi stadium was witness to one of the craziest onslaughts in recent memory as Glenn Phillips smashed his maiden ODI century.
Phillips was on 48* off 54 balls at the end of the 46th over but went berserk towards the end to hammer 58 off the last 20 balls and finish on 106* off 74 balls.
The unquestionable highlight of Phillips’ knock was the final over he faced off Shaheen Shah Afridi, which he bludgeoned for 25 runs.
New Zealand were 305/6 when the final over began, with Phillips on 83*. Shaheen, who had figures of 3/63 before that over, began it with a pair of wides. As it turned out, the first two wides were the calm before the storm.
Phillips started the over with a reverse-scoop boundary on the first legal delivery and then smashed consecutive sixes to move to 99*. He then took a quick double to bring up his maiden ODI ton off just 72 balls.
Phillips then took five more runs off the remaining two deliveries to finish on 106* and take New Zealand to 330/6 at the end of their innings. Shaheen’s figures ended up getting completely ruined as the left-armer finished with figures of 3/88, his second-most expensive spell in ODIs.
