Playing Career Marred By Controversies; Former Australian Captain Begins New Chapter With A Team
Having hung up his playing boots in 2023, the former wicketkeeper batter has now been made the head coach of the Australia A team.
Be it his sudden rise to the position of Australia captain after David Warner and Steve Smith were involved in Sandpaper Gate in 2018 or his unceremonious departure from the same position after charges of sexual misconduct were levelled against him ahead of the start of the 2021-22 Ashes series, Tim Paine’s playing career was marred by controversies.
However, having hung up his playing boots in 2023, the former wicketkeeper batter has now been made the head coach of the Australia A team, starting a new life.
“It’s time to spread my wings. I’ve been working with Australia ‘A’ as an assistant coach and the opportunity has come up for me to be the head coach,” Paine, who is one of the popular faces of the radio scene in Australia in the sports segment, announced on SEN Radio.
The 40-year-old further said that to pursue his role with Australia A, he must take a break from his radio career.
“I feel like it’s a hard balancing act to pursue a coaching career and talk in the media. The Australia ‘A’ programme is very exciting, there’s a lot of young talent to work with. It’s something I really enjoy doing. I’m very lucky, and I’m really looking forward to the next part of my journey,” he said.
Paine, who represented Australia in 35 Tests, leading them in 23 of them, will continue in his other roles, which include helping with the women’s team and the Adelaide Strikers in the Big Bash League (BBL).
