India Women opening batter Pratika Rawal was slapped with a 10% fine, and a demerit point was also added to her record for deliberately engaging in physical contact during the first One-Day International (ODI) against England Women in Southampton on July 16 (Wednesday).
Two incidents caught the match referee's eyes, both during the run-chase. In the 18th over bowled by Lauren Filer, Rawal ran across for a single, and while she was approaching the non-striker's end, she made physical contact with the bowler. In the next over, the youngster was bowled by Sophie Ecclesone for 36 off 51. Rawal made contact with the bowler while she was walking back to the dressing room.
The match referee felt that both could have been avoided. As a result, Rawal pleaded guilty Level 1 breach of the ICC's code of conduct, which is "inappropriate and deliberate physical contact between players in the course of play."
India Women went on to win the match by four wickets and go 1-0 up in the three-match series.
India pacer Mohammed Siraj was also charged with a similar offence recently. In the third Test against England at Lord's, he ran into Ben Duckett after dismissing him.
He was fined 15% of his match fee for breaching Article 2.5 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which related to “using language, actions or gestures which disparage or which could provoke an aggressive reaction from a batter upon his/her dismissal during an International Match.”
India Women will hope to wrap up the series in the second game set to be played at Lord's on July 19 (Saturday).
